GENETIC IMPROVEMENT
SUGARCANE

Selection Process

The PMGCA begins its work through genetic crossings that are carried out at the Serra do Ouro Crossing Station, Murici-AL, under the responsibility of the UFAL sugarcane breeding team, with the contribution of resources and work from other universities (RIDESA).

The station is located at latitude 9º13'S, at an altitude of 500 m, where the average rainfall is at least 2,000 mm per year and the average temperature is 19.5 to 26.5°C. These conditions make the location very favorable for the flowering of most sugarcane genotypes, as well as for good pollen fertility.

After obtaining the seeds, after the seedlings, they are planted in experimental fields located at the Center of Agricultural Sciences of UFSCar (Image 1), at the Valparaíso Experimental Station (Image 2) and also, from the third selection phase (T3), they are planted in experimental areas of the Partner Plants in the different production environments.
